Menopause
Menopause is a
normal change in a woman’s life when:
Ovaries suddenly
stop the production of oestrogen and
progesterone
Ovaries are
affected due to chemotherapy or
radiotherapy
When hysterectomy
is performed
Natural
cessations of the hormones occur when few egg cells
remain in the ovaries. When this happens the
response of ovaries to the pituitary hormones lowers.
Consequentially low production of oestrogen does not
stimulate the internal lining of the uterus
to produce the menstrual cycle. Menopause
officially commences when you have not had periods for 12
months at a stretch.
On average,
menopause affects woman at 51 years, but premature
menopause at 45 years occurs in 1% of women.
Hysterectomy, chromosomal disorders and chemotherapy are
some causes of premature menopause. Increased risk of
osteoporosis happens and women are recommended Hormone
Replacement Therapy until normal menopausal age is
reached. It helps in reducing hot flashes, remedying
vaginal dryness, slowing the process of osteoporosis
and helping to ease mood
disorders.
Healthy diet and
an exercise regimen help you in combating the effects of
menopause. Exercising reduces the risk of cardio diseases
while maintaining an ideal weight. Natural treatments
include eating soy, black cohosh, wild yam and valerian
root. Other therapies include Aromatherapy, Yoga and
Homeopathy.
